National Youth Leadership Training

Brownsea A NEW VISION OF
YOUTH LEADERSHIP

The Greater Yosemite Council, BSA is proud to present the new National Youth Leadership Training or NYLT during the week of June 12th. through 19th, 2005 at Camp John Mensinger.

In 2003, a national task force of leadership experts reviewed the former Junior Leader Training. They brought in the latest ideas and recast the training to make it fresh, vital, and more meaningful for Scouts of today. The task force pilot tested their new ideas in councils throughout the nation and produced our National Youth Leadership Training.

The old Golden Bear, Junior Leader Training (JLT) is now Brownsea, National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). Brownsea is an exciting, action packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops. The leadership skills taught during Brownsea can be used in many other situation demanding leadership of "self" and "others." This process begins with a "vision" of what success will look like in the future.

Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the primary responsibility for training their youth leaders. The purpose of Brownsea, National Youth Leadership Training is not to assume that role, but rather to support it. Brownsea features instruction in skills that can be used at home, at school, on the job, and, in particular, at the Scout unit level. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, along with audio-visual support, Brownsea participants will work hard and play hard together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

Give me an overview of the course?

The course models a month in the life of a troop – three meetings (one each day for the first three days) all leading up to a big outdoor experience (an overnight outpost camp). The course uses the patrol method and presents model Patrol Leader Council meetings.

Patrols are challenged early in the week to present to the troop at the end of the week their “Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.” While the challenge is designed to have them go through the four stages of team development, it will help patrols and individual Scouts internalize the leadership skills and concepts being presented to them along the way.

Throughout the course, the staff will be modeling the concepts and skills that are the core content of the course. The focus of each session is not only knowledge but giving the youth a “Toolbox of Skills’ that equips them with the “how.”
