Dear Scoutmaster/Committee Chair,
Brownsea-National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), is back! The course is great, the staff is experienced, and there was a lot of enthusiasm for this youth leadership training from last year's participants. Through activities, events, games, and adventures, NYLT participants will work and play hard together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer. The Scout will learn that leadership requires a vision, goals and planning, learn the stages of team development, and he will leave with a “toolbox” of leadership skills. This National Youth Leadership Training was developed by the Boy Scouts of America and is being offered by the Greater Yosemite Council with the name of Brownsea-National Youth Leadership Training for our youth leaders.
Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the primary responsibility for training their youth leaders. The purpose of NYLT is not to assume that role, but rather to enhance and support the Scoutmaster’s role. NYLT is a 5-day-long (Monday thru Saturday) training that features instruction in skills that can be used at home, at school, on the job, and, in particular, at the Scout unit level. We invite you to select your best Scouts, with an emphasis on all your unit leaders, especially your future Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, and Patrol Leaders to attend NYLT.
For a Scout to be considered for participation, he must be at least a First Class Scout and a minimum of 13 years of age, but less than 18 by June 14, 2007. He should be in a leadership position or be a Scout you feel is destined for a key leadership role in your troop. Since the conference will be conducted in a camp setting, it is important that the Scouts have competent skills in hiking, camping, and cooking. Scouts can only participate in this training if they have both their parent and Scoutmaster and/or Committee Chair approval.
National Youth Leadership Training will be under the direction of Dan Beynon, who will serve as Course Director. An associate staff of Scouters interested in supporting the NYLT course is still being assembled; we would like to see all districts have someone involved. Recommendation is Scouters that have completed Woodbadge. Scouters interested in supporting NYLT by serving on the associate staff should contact Dan Beynon. We are also assembling a staff of experienced youth leaders to serve as the conference faculty. Interviews for youth staff are currently underway. Dan Beynon can be reached at 209-581-8316 or via email at drbeynon@att.net.
Please help support this important training opportunity for your youth that is being provided by our council.
