Cub-O-Ree Was a Smash Hit!

During the weekend of April 21-23 the Golden Heritage District held their Cub-O-Ree at the Calaveras Fairgrounds in Frogtown. In attendance were 21 units representing Golden Heritage District (100% participation), 49er District, Big Valley District, and Waukeen District. The Cub-O-Ree theme "Going to the Movies" allowed each Cub Pack to decorate their campsite based on the theme of the movie they picked.

Monkey BridgePack 347's Sky Captain was a favorite campsite, with a run-way that lit up night, FANTASTIC! The Incredible's were just that, INCREDIBLE! Pack 343 showed a lot of Cub Scout Spirit all day long. Even Sponge Bob from Pack 353 made an appearance. Here come FUN!

During the Friday night program 24 Webelos Scouts crossed over to Boy Scouts with the assistance of the Nischa Sipo Chapter of the Order of the Arrow from Forty Niner District. This ceremony was followed by a new program for the Cub-O-Ree, "Hug-A-Tree" presented by the Ebbetts Pass Search and Rescue Team. The evening closed with a moving flag retirement ceremony in which 20 well serviced U.S. flags were retired. These flags had proudly flown over many city, county, and school buildings locally.

Team work at work.Saturday dawned cold and gray with a threat of rain. We all hoped that the rain would wait till all the events were over. The Cub Scouts had several choices of events: BB Guns, archery, bottle rockets, Cub-mobiles, monkey bridge, Jousting at King Arthur Court, Ben Hur chariot races, and Men In Black weapons of destruction. We also had an informative presentation on the Leave No Trace, Front Country Guidelines. The evening campfires allowed each Cub Pack to showcase their Cub Scout Spirit and lots of enthusiasm.Take that!

The adults were not left out either. The adult game was a participation game with teams of 5 adults. Each team carried a tire, constructed a stretcher and then carried a person, tire all, on their stretcher for a photo finish. We also did 3 training sessions since we had a captive audience. The training sessions were Leave No Trace principals for Cubs, BALOO and Leader Specific training for Cub Scout leaders. It was a busy weekend for all, with lots of happy faces on lots of Cub Scouts, Moms and Dads.

Robot R2D?Closing was the "Big Show" and even the smallest unit of only 1 Cub Scout, sang BINGO backed up by the voices of Venture Crew 353. Plenty of home spun entertainment was provided as each Cub Scout Pack presented a song or skit during the closing. We had many awards to give out to the winners of each competition, but in my eyes every Cub Scout there was a winner! We closed the program with the traditional collection and distribution of ashes from the previous years ashes. Our hope is that Cub Scout Pack 343 will carry on the Cub-O-Ree tradition in the Golden Heritage District.

I am retiring from hosting the Cub-O-Ree . We want all the Cub Scout Packs to keeping watching the Golden Heritage District web site as we will post the 2006 Cub-O-Ree plans here. Thanks for a wonderful run hosting the Cub-O-Ree! I'll always remember the smiling faces as we closed camp.
